DPS Launches Distracted Driving Crackdown Across Texas

The Texas Department of Public Safety is increasing enforcement efforts to crack down on distracted driving across the state.

The Texas Department of Public Safety is increasing enforcement efforts to crack down on distracted driving across the state.

For the next week, Texas Highway Patrol troopers will be watching for drivers who are texting, not moving over for emergency vehicles, or driving while distracted. The campaign is part of Operation CARE, a nationwide effort running from April 7th through April 14th.

Officials say distracted driving is already causing serious incidents in 2026, including troopers being struck while working on the roadside.

Drivers are reminded to follow the Move Over or Slow Down law, which requires motorists to change lanes or reduce speed when approaching emergency vehicles. Violations can result in fines up to $1,250 and more serious penalties if injuries occur.

Last year’s enforcement effort resulted in more than 79,000 citations and warnings statewide.
